Obituary for GALLEGOS

Teresa Emily of Santa Fe, New Mexico, died peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family on February 17, 2012. She was born December 19, 1930 to Dionisio and Ascension Tafoya in Las Vegas, NM. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart, John B. Gallegos, also of Las Vegas, NM. Teresa was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She instilled in her children the value of education, hard work, the importance of family and faith in our heavenly Father. Teresa served the community in a variety of ways. She worked for Santa Fe County Head Start as a volunteer, social worker, and director for more than 20 years. She was adamant that children and their families had every opportunity to benefit from early childhood education. After her retirement, she worked in the parish office at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. There, she also served as Sacristan, Eucharistic minister, Lector, and a member of the church choir. Teresa was an active member of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi where she was devoted to her parish family, as they were to her. Teresa was a professed member of the St. Francis Secular Franciscan 3rd Order. She welcomed all with a joyous light and open arms to join her in her faith in God. Teresa was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, John B. Gallegos; her parents; brothers, Alex Tafoya and wife Rose, Dennis Tafoya, and Phillip Tafoya and wife Irene; sisters, Mary Tafoya, Lenore Padilla and husband J.C; and brother-in-law Benito Duran. She is survived by her sister, Telesflora "Taffy" Duran; her beloved children, John Dennis Gallegos and wife Lynne Andersen, Robert Gallegos and wife Rosemary, Elizabeth Gallegos and husband Francisco, JoAnn Valdez and husband Victor, Anna Marie Acosta and husband Rafael, Jennifer Gallegos and fiance Justin; her beloved grandchildren, Rebekah Gallegos, John L. Gallegos, Stephen Gallegos, Joaquin and Gabriella Acosta, and Victoria and Joshua Valdez; and many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Berardinelli's Funeral Home 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe, NM (505) 984-8600. The Rosary will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, NM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, followed immediately by internment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A reception will follow at Crispin Hall, located at the Cathedral Basilica. Teresa has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
